Supporting workplace health, safety, wellbeing and injury outcomes in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in South Australia.

Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities.

Data highlights an opportunity to better understand and strengthen workplace health, safety and return to work outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Aboriginal people working in ACCOs through culturally responsive approaches and targeted support that take in to account the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers. This project aims to do this by listening to workers and organisations about what is working well and where additional support may be beneficial.

Healthy Workplaces for ACCOs Project

The ‘Healthy Workplaces for ACCOs’ Project is focused on listening to and learning from Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and workers to:

  • better understand the workplace health, safety and wellbeing experiences of people working in ACCOs, and,
  • identify culturally safe and appropriate opportunities to strengthen workplace systems, supports, and injury management approaches, with culturally safe responses for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers.

ReturnToWorkSA, a member of the Healthy Workplaces Collaborative Partnership, has partnered with Kimberley Wanganeen (of Kimberley Wanganeen Consultancy) and Marius Liddle (of MTL Consulting Services) to undertake community consultation for this project.

How you can get involved

There are two options for getting involved in the early stages of this project:

  1. An online survey to gather broad insights
  2. In-person and online workshops to explore issues & ideas in more detail

Your input will help shape future workplace health, safety, wellbeing and injury management initiatives for ACCOs across South Australia.

A survey will soon be available for you to share your experiences and perspectives on workplace health, safety and wellbeing in the ACCO sector.

ReturnToWorkSA will be sending out the survey links, but the survey itself will be designed and managed independently by Kimberley Wanganeen Consultancy.

  • Responses will go directly to Kimberley Wanganeen Consultancy.
  • Insights and themes will be communicated to ReturnToWorkSA by Kimberley Wanganeen Consultancy and MTL.
  • Consulting Services to inform the next stage of this work.
  • ReturnToWorkSA will not have access to individual responses.
  • The survey will be conducted in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). All information collected will be stored securely, used only for the purposes of this review, and will not be disclosed to third parties without consent.
  • Individuals will not be identifiable in any reported findings.

The survey link will also be available here once it opens.

In-person and online workshops will support the survey to further explore key issues and ideas. These workshops will be facilitated by Kimberley Wanganeen and Marius Liddle and provide an opportunity to:

  • discuss experiences and challenges
  • explore practical ideas and approaches
  • shape future initiatives

Workshop locations are yet to be decided and will be informed by interest gathered during the surveys.
